Declaration for a Healthy Climate

We, the undersigned, pledge to each other and to our children that we dedicate ourselves and our resources to restoring a healthy climate with ZERO degrees warming by the end of the century.

As part of our pledge we request that President Obama declare our country’s commitment to restoring a healthy climate.

The Context for Restoring Zero Warming

We could restore a healthy climate, with zero degrees warming.

This statement is surprising because climate experts have been organized around one idea: To limit earth’s warming to no more than 2 degrees Celsius.  While that may sound like a reasonable goal, an increase of two degrees will leave us with devastating consequences for people and for our planet. Already we are at half that increase and are seeing unprecedented sea level rise, year-round forest fires, super storms, devastated fisheries, and massive crop failures.

It is time to mobilize around a positive outcome: Restore a healthy climate.

Most experts agree that this could be accomplished by the end of this century. Most agree that we have the technical capabilities, albeit not fully developed, to halt warming and to reverse the warming that has already occurred.

What’s missing is public and political demand. The combination will spur rapid research and development that will help us accomplish what might seem like an unreasonable goal -- and to do so much sooner than many deem feasible today.

When John F. Kennedy declared that we, as a nation, would put a man on the moon by the end of the decade, few experts thought it was possible, safe or sensible. Yet we did it. The best scientific minds organized around how to make it happen rather than why it couldn’t or shouldn’t be done.

The moon program was an unprecedented commitment and it took just eight years, with engineers using slide rules. Kennedy did not tell us how to get to the moon: his declaration ignited a call to action from all sectors, and it sparked the imagination and the will to find solutions. Funding followed.

Cooling the planet is the moonshot of our era. Together, we can do this. We can restore a healthy climate for our children and grandchildren. We can restore temperatures and weather like we had in the 1990’s and before, with stable sea-levels, and no super storms.

It is time to create, rather than mitigate our future, to focus our creativity, our technology, and our resources around a bold idea, one that inspires and challenges us rather than one that defeats us.
In 1985 our goal was a stable climate that could be achieved by reducing emissions. That time and that climate is gone. Our goal now needs to be leaving a legacy of a climate that is healthy for our children and grandchildren. This requires not only reducing emissions, but also removing carbon from the atmosphere and cooling the planet.

Peter Drucker once said, “The best way to predict the future is to create it.”  If that’s true, it is time to work.
